Godzilla is stomping back into theaters.
The iconic kaiju has been causing chaos since the first Godzilla movie was released in 1954. Since his debut, the beast has appeared in more than 30 films, most recently in 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, a breakout commercial and critical success.
According to Variety, it made $116 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film in the franchise's history. In addition to box office success, Godzilla Minus One also won an Oscar in 2024 for Best Visual Effects.
With Godzilla Minus One breathing new life into the film series, it was only a matter of time before Godzilla returned to wreak more havoc. At CinemaCon in April 2026, the trailer for the sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, debuted, with a sneak peek of the monster going stateside.

Godzilla Minus Zero is a sequel to Godzilla Minus One, and will feature returning characters from the previous movie.
According to the official Godzilla website, the new movie "picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity."
During a presentation at CinemaCon 2026, director Takashi Yamazaki said, "In this new film, an even deeper despair will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family."
"When faced with overwhelming and inescapable force, how do people fight back?" he continued, per The Hollywood Reporter. "The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one."

Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, the stars of Godzilla Minus One, are returning to reprise their roles in Godzilla Minus Zero.
“I am beyond happy to be able to participate in a film set two years after Godzilla Minus One, which is one of the most important works of my life. I also feel proud to have been able to work with director Takashi Yamazaki and everyone on the team once again,” Kamiki said in a statement, per Gizmodo.
He continued, “The pressure of participating in a Godzilla work loved by so many people remains the same as in the previous film, but I have done my absolute best so that everyone who watches it, and everyone who loves Godzilla, can enjoy it.”
Hamabe released her own statement, expressing how she is "grateful to be able to exist in the world of Godzilla Minus One as Noriko."
"My heart is already racing with excitement to share this grand moment with everyone as soon as possible, and see Godzilla Minus Zero in theaters soon," she said, according to the outlet.
The actress added, "Since this work will be released in Japan and the U.S. around the same time, I am very happy to be able to share Godzilla’s shocking return not only with people in Japan but also with those in America."
Who is the director of Godzilla Minus Zero?

Yamazaki is the writer and director of Godzilla Minus Zero. He also wrote and directed the previous installment, Godzilla Minus One.
In addition to winning an Oscar in 2024, Yamazaki and his Godzilla Minus One team swept at the Japan Academy Awards that year, winning eight awards including Best Picture, according to Forbes.
