NEED TO KNOW

  • Buckingham Palace announced that Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank are expecting their third child this summer
  • The new baby will be fifteenth in line to the throne, following siblings August and Ernest
  • Princess Eugenie’s children are in the line of succession but do not hold royal titles or official roles

The British royal family will expand when Princess Eugenie's new baby is born, so where will the child arrive in the line of succession to the throne?

On May 4, Buckingham Palace announced that the princess is expecting her third child with her husband, Jack Brooksbank, and that the baby is "due this summer."

As Princess Eugenie, 36, is currently twelfth in the line of succession to the throne, her baby is due to enter that lineage as well.

King Charles' niece is followed in the line of succession by her sons August, 5, and Ernest, 2, who are thirteenth and fourteenth, respectively.

The new baby is expected to enter the succession fifteenth in line to the throne, bumping those behind them back a spot.

Eugenie's new baby will move Prince Edward back a place, followed by his son James, Earl of Wessex, 18, his daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, 22, and so on.

Princess Eugenie and Jack, 40, married in 2018 after about eight years of dating and her HRH title was featured in the palace pregnancy announcement.

"Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their third child together, due this summer," said the statement from Buckingham Palace. "August (aged 5) and Ernest (aged 2) are also very excited to have another sibling join the family."

"His Majesty The King has been informed and is delighted with the news," it continued.

Princess Eugenie and her sister Princess Beatrice were born royal as the daughters of the former Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. While the sisters grew up attending royal events and undertake charity work today, they don't hold working royal roles like their cousin Prince William and instead pursue private careers. While the children of Eugenie and Beatrice, 37, are born into the line of succession, they do not hold British royal titles and are being raised outside of the royal spotlight.

The family's dynamic was rocked in the fall when King Charles, 77, stripped his younger brother Andrew of his princely title in October 2025 as Andrew's links to the late Jeffrey Epstein came under renewed scrutiny. (Andrew's relationship with the American financier and convicted sex offender set his step back from public life in motion in 2019 and he has continuously denied any wrongdoing. The former Duke of York was arrested in February as police investigate a claim that he shared confidential information with Epstein in his previous role as a trade envoy for the U.K.)

When Andrew's royal titles were stripped, PEOPLE understood that the royal status of his Beatrice and Eugenie remained "wholly unaffected," retaining their royal titles and HRH styling.

Andrew, 66, who is now called Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, still remains in the line of succession to the throne. After his arrest in February, the BBC reported that the government was mulling legislation to remove him from the line of succession entirely.
