What would you do if you had discovered the key to eternal life? That's what the characters of Netflix's The Boroughs must grapple with in the season 1 finale.
The streamer's latest series from Stranger Things creators the Duffer brothers — which premiered on May 21 — follows a band of unlikely heroes as they team up to fight against a supernatural monster targeting fellow residents of their otherwise idyllic retirement community, The Boroughs. The multi-legged creature is first spotted by newcomer (and recent widower) Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), who witnesses it killing his first friend in The Boroughs, Jack (Bill Pullman).
Determined to uncover the otherworldly beast responsible for murdering his friend, Sam joins forces with his neighbors Art (Clarke Peters), Judy (Alfre Woodard), Wally (Denis O'Hare) and Renee (Geena Davis), as well as Renee's younger lover, law enforcement officer Paz (Carlos Miranda). The group of retirees soon discovers that it's not just one monster targeting their community, but a whole army of creatures that are feeding off of the residents' cerebrospinal fluid as they sleep.
The creatures are the children of a monster known as Mother, whose golden blood possesses magical powers — and allows those who drink it to never age another day. The founders of The Boroughs, Blaine (Seth Numrich) and Anneliese Shaw (Alice Kremelburg), and a small group of their cohorts have been consuming Mother's blood for decades, keeping them in a state of permanent youth. The Shaws created The Boroughs to have an endless supply of senior citizens for Mother and her children to feed off of — ensuring that they'd never run out of Mother's magic elixir.
When Sam and his friends discover the truth about The Boroughs, they hatch a plan to put an end to the horrors happening behind the scenes at their retirement community.
But who are the real monsters that need to be stopped — Mother and her children, or the scheming, self-serving Shaws? Here's everything that happened in The Boroughs season 1 finale — and what we know so far about a season 2.

The season 1 finale of The Boroughs, titled “Triple Audible,” begins with Sam flipping the group's plan on its head.
Though they initially plotted to kill Mother — taking away the Shaws' source of eternal life — and escape The Boroughs, Sam informs them that they need to save Mother instead.
While The Boroughs is celebrating its 75th anniversary, Wally sneaks Mother into the empty community center where he meets up with Sam, Art, Judy, Renee, Paz and Sam's daughter Claire (Jena Malone). Wally — who is suffering from stage four prostate cancer and whose husband died in the AIDS crisis — argues that they need to get Mother safely away from The Boroughs so that they can use her blood to rid the world of disease.
“Blaine and his Stepford staff found the fountain of youth and now I am going to use it,” Wally insists. “I'm going to use it for good.”
But Sam, who has discovered that he can telepathically communicate with Mother, reveals that that is not what she wants. After being kept alive for decades and sucked dry by the Shaws, Mother wants to be taken back to where she was born — a tree located in a cave in the middle of the New Mexico desert — to die on her own terms.
“We have to make a stand, for Mother, for The Boroughs, for everyone,” Sam argues.
After reluctantly getting the group on board with Mother's wishes, Sam and the group devise a plan to get Mother out to the cave — despite Blaine having blocked off all of the exits from The Boroughs. They decide to travel through the community's underground tunnel system — which is primarily used by Mother's children to feed off of the residents as they sleep — to get Mother out undetected.
But as they are about to flee, Blaine and his crew show up at the community center. Judy and Art volunteer to distract them while the rest of the group can get on the move with Mother.
What happens down in the tunnels?
As Art and Judy attempt to hold off Blaine and Anneliese, Sam — accompanied by Wally, Renee, Paz and Claire — navigates down into the tunnels to get Mother back to the tree where she was born.
As they are making their way, however, Mother stops them and motions towards the tunnel that leads to where her children are being held underground in cages. Through Sam, she communicates that she wants to save her children from Blaine and Anneliese. Renee and Paz volunteer to go free Mother's monsters and then meet back up with the group at the cave.
When Renee and Paz arrive at the underground warehouse where Mother's children are being held captive, they realize that they need a key to activate the control board that unlocks the cages. As they try to think of a workaround, they discover Hank, the security officer (and Paz's boss), whom they previously sent crashing to his supposed death out in the desert.
Hank is one of Blaine's minions, but he reveals to Paz and Renee that working for The Boroughs' leader has been like living in a prison. Renee suggests that he give them the key to help stick it to Blaine for good, and the battered security guard agrees. Paz and Renee are able to free Mother's many children — but there's another problem brewing.
Right as the group with Mother is about to head down a tunnel, a gate comes crashing down, forcing the group to pivot directions. They're being herded by Blaine, they realize, to Sam's house in The Boroughs. Blaine figured out where the group was headed with Mother after taking Art and Judy hostage — and having Anneliese stab Judy while Art watched to extract the information that he needed.
Sam tells the group that they have to prepare to take their stand against Blaine and Anneliese, even if they are weaponless. But Claire reveals that the group is not empty-handed: When visiting her dad's house earlier, Claire managed to fix the television transformer contraption that Sam had previously built to try and kill the monsters.
Since Blaine, Anneliese and their cohorts are kept alive by Mother's blood, the television transformer will have the same explosive effect on them that it does on the monsters — at least, the group hopes.

As expected, Blaine and Anneliese arrive — with backup — at Sam's house, but Sam and the group are ready. Wally opens the garage doors, revealing their television transformer weapon, as Sam and Claire tell their foes: “Welcome to The Boroughs, we hope you have the time of your life.”
With the transformer clicked on, one associate of Blaine and Anneliese's immediately incinerates. Blaine and Anneliese are hand-in-hand, as the transformer's power envelopes them, suspending them in mid-air as their bodies begin to disintegrate from the electricity. Blaine looks over to Anneliese and tells her “I love you” — right before Anneliese explodes into nothingness.
Meanwhile, Blaine's shell of a body goes down in the driveway, and the group believes they've defeated the evil duo at the helm of The Boroughs. But before they can celebrate victory, Art turns their attention to another crisis: Judy.
Judy is bleeding out from the stab wounds she sustained at the hands of Anneliese, and her injuries are too severe for even Wally — a doctor — to fix. As Art holds his wife's hands, Judy takes her last breath and dies in his arms.
Art and the rest of the group are left devastated — but as they mourn the loss of their friend, Mother stands up and comes close to Judy. She begins transmitting her healing energy into Judy's stab wound and brings her back from the dead.
“Well that's a miracle,” Art exclaims as Judy comes back to life.
With Judy saved, the group turns their attention back to the original goal: getting Mother to the cave. Sam takes off with Mother in his golf cart, bound for the desert — but as they pull away, Blaine's fingers ominously start moving in the driveway.
Does Mother die?
Sam arrives at the cave with Mother and places her body at the base of the tree where she was born (and now, wants to die).
But just as Sam tells her, “You made it,” a resurrected Blaine arrives and bashes Sam over the head with a brick.
Blaine begins to relentlessly beat Sam in retaliation for eradicating his wife, Anneliese. The Boroughs founder refuses to accept her fate, telling Sam that he is going to use Mother to bring Anneliese back. As Blaine overpowers Sam, Mother begins to glow in the background, wanting to come to Sam's rescue. But Sam tells her that it's OK for her to let go.
“No, I can't. I can't die,” Blaine exclaims, as he realizes what will happen to him when Mother is gone.
“Everybody does,” Sam tells him. “Welcome to the club.”
Then, as Mother's monster children arrive and gather all around her at the base of the tree, she explodes into oblivion and dies.

After the explosion, time flashes back to the night that Sam's wife Lily (Jane Kaczmarek) died of a stroke. Initially, it is unclear if he has died and is being reunited with Lily in the afterlife.
But then, Lily reveals to him that this moment is a gift from Mother.
“How long do we have?” Sam asks.
“Are you going to stand there asking questions, or are you going to dance with your beautiful wife?” Lily responds.
The two embrace and dance together in their living room to Bruce Springsteen's “Thunder Road.” Sam tells Lily that they will be together again one day, to which Lily responds, “We are together, always.”
As they share one last kiss and embrace, Sam is transported back to present day, where he is in the cave in the aftermath of Mother's death.
Blaine's decrepit skeleton is lying on top of Sam, confirming that The Boroughs' founder has been eliminated for good. As Paz and Renee show up, Sam confirms to them that Mother is gone and is finally at peace. With their mission accomplished, the trio agree to go back to The Boroughs.
The episode ends with the group — Paz, Renee, Art, Judy, Wally, Claire and Sam — all gathered for a barbecue at Sam's house. With the threat of monsters (both human and otherworldly) removed from The Boroughs, the spirits at the neighborhood gathering are high.
But in the final scene, when Sam goes to the bathroom to change the bandage on his forehead, the mirror flickers with static at his reflection. Are there still supernatural happenings in The Boroughs — and is Sam now the cause of them?
Will there be a season 2 of The Boroughs?
Despite the open-ended conclusion of season 1, Netflix has yet to order a second season of The Boroughs.
Previous series (namely, Stranger Things) from the Duffer brothers' production house, Upside Down Pictures, have gone on to have multiple seasons on the streaming platform; however, a newly inked deal between the Duffers and Paramount could impact The Boroughs' future.
In August 2025, the Duffer brothers and Upside Down Pictures signed a four-year exclusive deal with Paramount to produce feature films, television series and streaming projects, Deadline reported. The deal took effect in April 2026, when the Duffers' current partnership with Netflix ended.
