  • The Four Seasons was picked up for a third season at Netflix

With two seasons of The Four Seasons in the can and another on the way, Will Forte is reflecting on his second act with longtime friend Tina Fey.

“It’s the best. Anytime you get to work with somebody that you’re friends with is always fantastic,” Forte, 56, tells PEOPLE recently, while discussing his new movie Coyote vs. Acme. “I have known Tina for years, but then coming in, you’re still a little nervous, you want to do a good job and stuff, but, with Tina, I’ve known her for so long. That’s number one. Number two, she’s a comedy queen, right?”

Fey, 56, co-created The Four Seasons — an adaptation of Alan Alda’s 1981 movie of the same name — as a Netflix comedy-drama in 2025. The series is the latest in a career of television writing for Fey that has included acclaimed work on Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Mr. Mayor, among other projects. Forte and Fey overlapped at SNL between 2002 and 2006, while Fey served as the sketch comedy series’ head writer.

Forte appeared in Fey’s 30 Rock several times in guest spots over the years, but in The Four Seasons, he holds down a costarring role alongside the multi-hyphenate as Jack, husband to Fey’s character Kate. “Everything she does is so well put together, so incredibly well written. Everything is top-notch,” Forte says of Fey’s television productions. “The people that she works with, she’s been working with the same people for a long time. A lot of the 30 Rock crew is intact there because she just knows how to put together a group of people who are so kick-ass at their jobs and also just cool people that you want to hang around with.”

“There’s a real art to that,” Forte notes. “So, not only is she maybe the best there ever has been at comedy writing, certainly up there with all the greats, but she’s just, like, knows how to put together groups of awesome people. So to be a part of that in any way is exciting, but to have the honor of actually playing her husband in something? Wow. I mean, what, what an honor.”

The Four Seasons revolves around a group of couples whose friendships are upended when they learn one couple is breaking up, all while the friend group takes four vacations together. Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Marco Calvani and Erika Hennigsen, Steven Pasquale and Julia Lester also costar.

In June, Kenney-Silver, 56, and Forte told PEOPLE at the show’s season 2 all about how the show’s cast group chat functions following the death of Carell’s character Nick at the end of season 1.

“I mean, we’re still all together offscreen in the sense that we’re still this group, we still exist in a text-thread world,” Kenney-Silver said at the premiere. “We’re still constantly talking to each other and we’re going to see each other later tonight and all that great stuff. So Steve Carell is still alive and well. But not having him there in that home would have been really hard, I think.”

Coyote vs. Acme is in theaters now, while The Four Seasons is streaming on Netflix.
