Woman Suffers Major Injuries After Being Struck by Boat in Hit-and-Run Tubing Accident on Colorado River

The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. local time on Saturday, June 20, authorities confirmed

A woman has sustained major injuries after being struck by a boat while tubing on the Colorado River over the weekend, authorities have said.

At about 7 p.m. local time on Saturday, June 20, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Marine Enforcement Unit responded to a report of a "hit-and-run major injury boating accident" just north of the Needles Bridge on the border between California and Arizona, according to a news release.

"Upon arrival, deputies learned the adult victim had been struck by a boat while floating down the river on an inner tube," the release stated. "The victim sustained major injuries as a result of the collision."

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, and the victim was transported by air ambulance to a Las Vegas hospital for treatment. Her identity and current condition are not known.

Authorities said that it remained unclear whether alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the crash, per KTLA 5. The outlet stated that the victim was fighting for her life. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the incident has been asked to contact police.

PEOPLE has reached out to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for additional information, but did not immediately hear back.

The incident comes after several other serious tubing accidents across the U.S. in recent months.

On June 6, recent high school graduate Jonis Warren Jr., 18, died while tubing on the Bogue Chitto River in Louisiana, while 22-year-old college grad Sahr Sewar drowned while tubing on Arizona's Salt River in May.
