NEED TO KNOW

  • Tyler Mane revealed his breast cancer diagnosis, noting it is rare and affects 1 in 755 men
  • Mane credited his wife for urging him to seek early treatment and is now undergoing chemotherapy
  • The actor hopes to raise awareness about male breast cancer and encourage early detection among men

Tyler Mane revealed that he was recently diagnosed with a “super rare” case of breast cancer.

On Monday, June 8, the 59-year-old actor — best known for his role as Sabretooth in X-Men — posted a video on Instagram and opened up about the “bad news” regarding his health.

“Yep. I have breast cancer. And yep, it's super rare,” he said. “One in 755 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and I'm one of them."

“I'll be honest, my first reaction was to keep it a secret. I mean, it's kind of embarrassing,” he admitted. “But then I found out that men are more likely to be diagnosed in advanced stages BECAUSE it's not talked about and not looked for. In fact, my doctors all dismissed it and it was only because my wife pushed me to get the lump removed that I got in early.”

Mane revealed that he is now beginning his first round of chemotherapy, sharing a clip of himself in the hospital while undergoing treatment. He held up his middle finger and whispered ‘F— cancer' to the camera.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, male breast cancer is rare and accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses in the United States. A stark difference between women, where 1 in 8 will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime

After hearing the statistics, Mane said he wants to change them and encouraged men to talk about it more and follow his journey.

“If caught early, it's VERY treatable,” he said in the caption. “Time to answer the Wake Up Call!”

The following day, Mane shared another video during his second day of chemotherapy, expressing his appreciation for the support and well wishes after sharing his diagnosis.

“This made me very emotional and brought me to tears,” he said in an update.

“Thank you so much for all the love everyone. I greatly appreciate it,” he added. “I got this. I'm gonna kick cancer‘s ass. Thank you for coming along for the journey. We need to spread the awareness. Cancer sucks but if you catch it quick enough, you can win this battle.”

Mane started his career as a professional wrestler before transitioning to acting. He starred as Sabretooth in 2000's X-Men and later reprised his role as Wolverine's nemesis in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. The Canadian actor also appeared as villain Michael Myers in Halloween in 2007 and Halloween II in 2009, as well as the 2004 epic film Troy as Ajax.
