2 Children, Ages 7 and 11, Were Thrown from a Jeep in the Middle of the Night in Crash That Killed Woman in Alabama

The crash is still under investigation, per local authorities, according to multiple local news outlets

A woman was killed and two children were thrown from a vehicle in a car accident in Alabama.

The incident occurred in Autauga County on Highway 14 on Saturday, July 18, at 2:32 a.m. local time, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), per local news outlets WSFA, WIAT and the Montgomery Advertiser.

ALEA did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on the incident.

Authorities said the driver, Autaugaville resident Kristi Matthews, was ejected from the Jeep Grand Cherokee she was driving after the Jeep departed the road, hit a culvert, became airborne and then landed in a ditch, per WSFA, WIAT and the Montgomery Advertiser.

Matthews, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two children, ages 11 and 7, were also thrown from the vehicle. They were both transported to a local hospital with injuries, per the outlets.

The extent of the children’s injuries is not yet known.

Neither Matthews nor the children were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, according to WSFA, WIAT and the Montgomery Advertiser.

The relationship between Matthews and the two children was not immediately clear.

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing, according to WSFA and the Montgomery Advertiser.
