20-Year-Old College Basketball Player with Dreams of Playing in WNBA Killed in Freeway Crash

Family and friends are mourning the death of a 20-year-old college basketball player who aspired to play in the WNBA.

Jhenéy Wallace, of Victorville, Calif., died on Wednesday, July 15 in a single-vehicle car accident on the I-15 freeway in the Cajon Pass, according to a press release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office that identifies her as Jhenéy Harris.

Wallace, a student at Victor Valley Community College, was one of three people inside a Hyundai Veloster when the car left I-15 southbound and crashed down an 80-foot embankment at approximately 1:51 p.m., according to KTLA-TV.

Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver and her daughter — Wallace’s friend — were critically injured.

Now, Tamara Wallace is remembering her “very bubbly, always happy” daughter.

“She was my best friend, my firstborn,” Wallace told KTLA. “Always kept me smiling and encouraged me to do things. She was the best sister to her little sister and brother, very bubbly, always happy and loving.”

Wallace’s teammates at the junior college are also honoring the late athlete, who just finished her first year at the school, where she came off the bench and played in 24 games as a forward/center.

“Our Victor Valley College Women’s Basketball family continues to mourn the loss of one of our own, Jhenéy Wallace,”  Jhenéy was more than a teammate—she was a friend, a daughter, a sister, cousin, granddaughter, and a cherished member of our Ram family whose impact will never be forgotten.”
