20-Year-Old Dies After Experiencing Medical Emergency While Hiking in New Hampshire

A 20-year-old man from Lancaster, Mass., died while hiking in New Hampshire after experiencing a "medical incident" on Mount Monadnock, officials said.

Joshua Luth was found by Good Samaritans at about 4:11 p.m. local time on Saturday, June 13, according to a press release from NH Fish and Wildlife. Luth was found on the Cascade Link Trail just under a mile away from Park Headquarters on Poole Road in Jaffrey, N.H. The hikers who discovered Luth attempted CPR and called 911, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

NH Fish and Wildlife said that members of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Jaffrey Fire Department, Rindge Fire Department, Peterborough Fire Department, Dublin Fire Department, Troy Fire Department, Keene Fire Department, New Ipswich Fire Department, Massachusetts Lifeflight, Greatbrook Ambulance, Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance, Jaffrey Police Department, Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid, and the Cheshire County Sheriff's Dispatch Office all aided in the rescue effort.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is still investigating Luth's death, per the press release. The nature of the medical emergency Luth experienced has not been disclosed.

Mount Monadnock stands at 3,165 feet, according to the park's official website. The park is surrounded by "thousands of acres of protected highlands" and offers "expansive views." The mountain has been featured in the works of prominent authors Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. In 1987, Mount Monadnock was designated a National Natural Landmark.
