For Kaelah Torres, March 21 has always been a difficult day. It's her youngest brother Christian's birthday, forever an emotional milestone since he tragically died in a drowning accident at the age of 2 in 2010.
But when her best friend, Brooke Stewart, called to tell her that she was getting married on March 21 this year — what would have been Christian's 18th birthday — Kaelah felt only joy.
"All of my memories of Christian are of him laughing and smiling — we called him 'Boogie' because of how much he danced around. Brooke reminds me of those same qualities," Kaelah, 25, tells PEOPLE. "All I could think was what a privilege it is that this day will no longer only be associated with Christian’s birth, but will also mark the beginning of the union between what I call 'the older sister I never had' and her lifelong partner."
Kaelah says she and Brooke, 31, talked about the significance of the date at the time, but then she didn't bring it up again because she "wanted to make sure the day was all about Brooke."
Little did she know, Brooke, who asked Kaelah to be a bridesmaid at her spring wedding in St. Augustine, Fla., wasn't about to let such an emotional milestone for her friend go quietly unacknowledged. As seen in a now-viral video jointly shared by the two women on Instagram, Brooke surprised Kaelah with a birthday cake, adorned with lit candles, in honor of Christian's 18th birthday.

In the touching moment, the pair shared a tearful hug and blew out the candles together.
"I had no idea that my friend was planning to get him a cake and recognize him," Kaelah recalls, noting that she was incredibly moved by Brooke's heartfelt gesture.
"I am so grateful to know someone as caring and selfless as Brooke. In the moment, I felt completely caught off guard — in the best, most emotional way," she tells PEOPLE. "Of course, I had thought about [Christian's birthday] that morning, but I didn’t want to take any attention away. It was such a thoughtful and unexpected gesture, especially on a day that was supposed to be all about Brooke."
Recalling the mix of emotions she experienced, Kaelah adds: "I felt an immediate wave of gratitude and love, but also a deep sense of sadness because it brought my brother to the front of my mind in such a real way. I felt seen, cared for, and understood in a way that’s hard to put into words, and it made the moment incredibly meaningful."

Kaelah, who is the founder of the social media marketing agency Seriously Unserious, says Brooke's surprise was "tangible evidence" of the beautiful — and rare — nature of the pair's friendship.
"Brooke truly sees me — not just the version of me that shows up for big moments, but the parts of my life that carry weight too. It showed me how deeply she cares — that even on one of the biggest days of her life, she made space for something that mattered to me," she explains. "It felt like she was honoring my brother and acknowledging that he’s still a part of me, always. It meant love in a very intentional, selfless way. Like, you matter, your story matters, and the people you’ve lost aren’t forgotten."

Kaelah says Brooke's remembrance of her brother also prompted her to sit with and confront the bittersweet emotions of marking both Christian's would-be birthday and her best friend's big day.

"Oftentimes, I let things pass without giving them much weight because it’s easier than fully feeling them. This was a healthy confrontation that came from a place of love," she explains. "It made it easier to face what that day has meant for me in the past and merge it with what it will now mean for me in the future."
Recalling the life-shattering day when Christian drowned on June 28, 2010, Kaelah says she and her family were living in the military town of Fayetteville, N.C., while her dad was serving in the Army. The family's nanny was on vacation at the time, and Kaelah's father was away on an overseas deployment, so a family friend stepped in to babysit Kaelah, who was 10, and her siblings while her mother was at work.
At one point in the afternoon, Christian went missing. The babysitter eventually found him in the family's backyard pool, and it was Kaelah who bravely called 911. Christian was rushed to the hospital, where he was sadly declared brain dead the next day, June 29.

Christian remained on life support until Kaelah's father could get home from overseas, and on July 1, his organs were donated to save three lives.
In the wake of the tragedy, as Kaelah navigated her immense grief, she says she "stepped up" as the eldest sibling to her younger sister Paige, then 8, and brother Daniel, then 5. (She also has two older brothers, Michael, now 31, and Vincent, now 29.)
The family eventually moved to a new home, giving them a "fresh start," and Kaelah's mom became pregnant with her youngest sibling, sister Trinity, born on June 25, 2011, just days before the first anniversary of Christian's death.
"She honestly healed me and has been a mini-me ever since," Kaelah says of Trinity. "There is truly nothing I love more in this world than being her big sister. Taking care of her made things feel normal again — not identical, but familiar."

Each year on Christian's birthday, Kaelah and her siblings released balloons with messages or memories written on them. When Kaelah turned 18, she got a tattoo in her brother's memory, featuring a recreation of a childhood photo of the pair.
Over the years, Kaelah has also held tight to precious memories of her late brother, including playing in the rain with him and giggling as he rode on one side of her parents' elliptical machine while wearing a construction worker costume.
When her video of Brooke's cake surprise went viral, Kaelah received an outpouring of supportive comments, which she says brought her "a lot of peace."
"So many people who hadn’t heard this part of my story sent prayers and kind messages," she tells PEOPLE. "Oversharing comes naturally to me, but this topic is heavier and has been different to navigate. Seeing so many people recognize Brooke for who she is has been one of the best parts. That’s the kind of friend she is: someone who shows up 24/7, someone who makes the little things big."
