The 9-year-old suffered multiple bite wounds after being attacked by several dogs while collecting sand on a beach in Bimini, authorities said

A 9-year-old boy was rushed back to the U.S. after a trip to the beach in the Bahamas turned into a terrifying encounter with several dogs.
The child was staying on Bimini when he went to a nearby beach to gather sand at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
While the boy was at the beach, several dogs attacked him, leaving him with injuries across multiple parts of his body, police said.
An unidentified man came to the child’s aid and managed to drive the dogs away before leaving the area. After the attack ended, the boy made it back to the apartment where he was staying and told his mother what had happened, according to authorities.
At approximately 10:26 a.m., a woman alerted the Alice Town Police Station to the attack and asked for officers to respond to a beach near a local business, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Officers arrived and encountered the boy with his mother before he was taken to the Bimini Community Clinic for medical attention, authorities said.
A physician treated the child for numerous dog bites on his right thigh and arm, left leg, face and head, according to police. His condition was considered serious, with his injuries described by medical personnel as potentially life-threatening, according to the press release.
The severity of the boy’s injuries prompted an emergency evacuation to the U.S. later that day.
The U.S. Coast Guard stepped in to transport the boy to the U.S. for further treatment later that day, with his father accompanying him, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

After the Coast Guard flight arrived at Air Station Miami, emergency medical personnel took over the boy’s care and transported him to a hospital in the area, according to U.S. Coast Guard Southeast.
Footage released by the Coast Guard showed the boy being moved on a stretcher during the operation.

“This case reflects the outstanding work of the command center watch team and Air Station Miami crew, whose response and teamwork helped ensure the person was transported to a higher level of care as quickly and safely as possible,” Southeast District Command Center watchstander OS2 Christian Delgado said in a statement.
Authorities have since determined who owns the dogs involved in the attack. The owner is cooperating with police as they work to find the animals and have them secured and removed, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
