The magical world of Elden Ring is coming to life on the big screen.
A24 confirmed in May 2025 that it was adapting the hit video game franchise alongside its publisher, Bandai Namco Entertainment, with Alex Garland set to direct and write, per Deadline.
Though details about the project have been kept under wraps, a few of the movie's stars have been confirmed, including Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw and Cailee Spaeny, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The hit original third-person role-playing game, released in 2022, is set in a dark fantasy world and lets players embark on various adventures. Players explore the environment using a slew of weapons and magic spells in hidden dungeons, caves, catacombs and more.
The video game became an instant success and has sold over 30 million copies as of April 2025 — making it one of the bestselling video games of all time, according to Gematsu.
From the premise of the video game to who will be involved in the movie, here's everything we know so far about the Elden Ring movie ahead of its March 2028 release.
What is Elden Ring about?

Elden Ring is a bestselling dark fantasy action role-playing video game that lets users explore the magical environment called the Lands Between, filled with dungeons, dragons and demigods, among other mythical creatures.
As players advance in the world, they must try to collect remnants of the Elden Ring — a set of powers that, together, control the laws of reality.
If a player restores the Elden Ring, they become the new Elden Lord over the Lands Between.
The 2022 mythological game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and was written by George R. R. Martin. Notably, Martin also wrote the fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, which inspired the hit show Game of Thrones.
Elden Ring was developed by the Japanese video game company FromSoftware and released by the Japanese video game publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment.
After the game was released, it rose in the ranks and sold 13.4 million copies worldwide by March 2022. Elden Ring won several Game of the Year awards, including Game of the Year and Best Game Direction, and was listed in the top 20 video games of all time by GQ in 2023.
Three years after its release, Elden Ring announced that it had sold over 30 million copies.
Who is in the cast of Elden Ring?

In addition to Connor, Whishaw and Spaeny, several other actors have been confirmed in the Elden Ring cast list.
Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz will also appear in the film, per The Hollywood Reporter.
A24 has not released any character details for Elden Ring.
Who is directing the Elden Ring adaptation?

In May 2025, several outlets confirmed that Elden Ring was being developed into a live-action movie by A24. In addition, Garland was also announced as both the director and writer.
The director has worked on a myriad of films with A24. Prior to his involvement with Elden Ring, he directed the production company's Iraq war film Warfare, which grossed over $32 million in the first month of the film's release in April 2024, per Box Office Mojo.
Garland also directed Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), Men (2022) and Civil War (2024).
Meanwhile, Variety reported that Martin, who wrote the video game, will help produce the film adaptation.
Will the game's entertainment company, Bandai Namco, be involved?

In addition to Garland being named director, it was also confirmed in May 2025 that the video game's publisher, Bandai Namco, will join A24 as a production partner, per Variety.
However, it's unclear if the game's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, will get in on the action.
The outlet also confirmed that one of A24's top producers, Peter Rice, will directly work with Garland and Bandai Namco. The British film production company, DNA Films, is also set to collaborate on the film.
When will Elden Ring be released?
Elden Ring will premiere in theaters on March 3, 2028, per The Hollywood Reporter.
