NEED TO KNOW
- A family’s pet goat stumbled upon firefighters in a Colorado forest and decided to help them with the Rock Creek Fire
- Named Goldie, the goat “led them toward the fire area and even helped with some fuel mitigation along the way,” the Colorado Springs Fire Department wrote on Facebook
- Officials later learned the goat is a nearby family’s pet
Firefighters battling the Rock Creek Fire in Colorado got a surprise assist from a four-legged friend — a goat named Goldie.
In a Facebook video, which has attracted more than 2.5 million views since the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) posted it on July 9, the white and brown animal can be seen strutting alongside firefighters in a forest.
“Every crew needs a good leader … apparently ours has four legs 🐐🔥,” the CSFD captioned the video, adding, “Our firefighters got an unexpected escort from a very determined goat who led them toward the fire area and even helped with some fuel mitigation along the way.”
“We’re not saying she’s ready for a badge… but we’re also not saying she isn’t😂,” the department quipped about Goldie’s helpful efforts.
Goldie, a 4-year-old Nigerian dwarf goat, stayed with the firefighters for hours chomping on leaves as they worked to put out the fire and clear brush, according to the Associated Press. Goldie then followed them to their firetrucks before trailing after one vehicle as it drove away.

The department later learned the goat was actually a nearby family’s pet.
“GREAT NEWS!! This sweet little friend’s owners reached out to us,” the CSFD explained. “She is a family goat. She made it back home safely with our firefighters as they returned.
“We have a feeling this is NOT the last time you’ll see her on our social,” the CSFD teased in the comments section of the viral video, where one commenter warned, “If you don’t give her a little fireman’s hat right now…”
