- An Australian couple’s wedding mishap went viral after the groom, George Philip, ripped his pants while taking photos with the bride, Molly Philip
- The groom’s blue underwear became an unexpected highlight, fulfilling the “something blue” wedding tradition
- Despite the wardrobe malfunction, the couple laughed it off and carried on with their reception
A wedding in Australia took a hilarious turn after the groom's pants split.
Molly and George Philip, both 29, wed on Friday, April 10, in a ceremony at Elizabeth Bay House, followed by a reception at Franca. Minutes before the reception, the couple were taking wedding photos with their content creator, Modern Day Romance, and photographer, Zoë Morley, when one shot went wrong.
"People always say something will go wrong at your wedding, this just wasn’t one I’d anticipated," Molly tells PEOPLE.

When George lifted Molly up outside in her ball gown for a romantic photo of her affectionately looking down at him, his loving glance up at her instantly turned panicked.
The groom announced that he feared his pants had ripped. Once he set Molly down, he turned around with his hands spread on his buttocks, revealing blue underwear peeking through a large tear in his black bottoms. Molly teases, "He ended up being my 'something blue.' "
"George knew immediately, the sound was genuinely loud," the bride recalls of the tear. "It took me a few seconds longer to piece together what had happened, but the moment he whispered 'my pants,' I knew he must have torn them when he squatted down to pick me up."

George posted a video of the wardrobe malfunction on Instagram, and the clip — fittingly captioned "Something old, new, borrowed and blue?" — went viral.
"His face in the video is pure shock, and honestly that’s my favorite part of the whole thing," Molly says.
The bride "couldn’t believe it" and thought the entire thing was "completely hysterical."
"Even now it doesn’t feel like a bad memory at all," she says. "I’m so glad it was captured. If you look at the photos taken during and after, you can see the mix of shock and humor playing out on both our faces in real time."

George was "less concerned" about his appearance, and "more worried" that his ripped trousers would prevent him and Molly from accomplishing the lift they had been practicing for their first dance.
Because the newlyweds didn't want to be late to their reception, George had no choice but to carry on in his ruined pants. He thought that that the tear "wasn’t obvious with his jacket on," but after dinner he was finally able to change out of them just in time for the first dance.
"I did have a sewing kit, but it was nowhere near enough for a 20cm+ rip," Molly says. "Quite a few friends offered to swap pants with George. At one point, he actually tried a pair, but they were far too short, so he went back to the torn ones. Just before our speeches and first dance, a friend ducked home and came back with a spare pair."

Most of the wedding guests "had no idea about the mishap." Those who did, however, thought that George's "something blue" underwear choice was hilarious.
"We walked to the reception laughing about his choice to wear blue underwear," Molly shares. "Earlier in the week, I’d been rattling off the 'something new, old, borrowed, and blue' I'd be wearing, but I still hadn’t found my 'something blue.' George got wind of the tradition and decided he needed to observe it too, despite not having known it existed until that point. I found it so funny and endearing and honestly, lucky, because I’d completely forgotten at the last moment."

The couple "can't believe" that their video has gone viral.
"It’s had over 10 million views, and while we always thought it was funny and something our friends would appreciate, we never imagined it would reach this many people when it was posted to Instagram," Molly tells PEOPLE. "All I’ll say is: I did not expect to be upstaged at my own wedding by George’s underpants."
