Tom Holland is back as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If only anyone could remember that he’s Spider-Man!

Holland’s fourth solo movie as the titular superhero — which hit theaters on July 31, 2026 — picks up years after 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter anonymously protecting New York City and keeping his distance from loved ones MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) after all memory of him has been magically wiped from their minds. 

Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s twisty, action-packed sequel welcomes back Marvel Cinematic Universe characters The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Bruce Banner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), plus Liza Colón-Zayas as Detective Jean DeWolff, Tramell Tillman as Department of Damage Control Head Bill Metzger, Sadie Sink in a role kept under wraps and several others spoiled below. 

So, what happens at the end of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and what does it mean for Peter and the MCU? Here’s everything to know about the movie’s conclusion and intriguing post-credits scene.

How does Spider-Man: Brand New Day end?

Brand New Day sees Holland’s Peter Parker isolated from Zendaya’s MJ and Batalon’s Ned, only appearing unmasked during his trips to the grave of his late aunt May (Marisa Tomei, who appears in flashbacks). Loneliness and stress upon seeing his old friends again cause a disturbing evolution in his spider-like abilities, including organic webbing produced from his wrists and barely controllable violence. 

As Spider-Man, he discovers — partially with the help of Florence Pugh’s returning New Avengers member Yelena Belova — that attacks on N.Y.C.’s Department of Damage Control (DODC) come from a mind-controlling possessor of strangers’ bodies seeking mysterious information. That’s revealed to be Sink’s character (spoiler alert!) Jean Grey of the X-Men, whose powers include telepathy and eventually telekinesis.

After Jean possesses both Ruffalo’s Hulk and Bernthal’s The Punisher to get at Tillman’s Metzger, Spider-Man shuts down her powers with the help of the same DNA inhibitor device he’s using on himself. This allows Metzger to capture Jean — and subject her to the same cruel experimentation he performed on her telepathic sister Sara. 

Realizing that the DODC killed Sara, Jean’s powers surge, freezing every New Yorker for miles around as she threatens Metzger and takes on Spider-Man via the group of ninjas known as the Hand. Our newly empowered hero manages to placate Jean but is accidentally shot by The Punisher, who takes him to a hospital to recover. 

Where do things stand with Peter and his friends?

Peter crosses paths with roommates MJ and Ned, who continue to have only memories of being rescued by Spider-Man. But MJ, after being possessed by Jean and taken to safety, discovers the revealing note Peter almost delivered to her at the end of No Way Home. Although she understands a spell has wiped her memories, MJ tells Peter she can’t love him again. 

Masked as Spider-Man, Peter joins MJ at her apartment with an awestruck Ned and the three hang out like old times. MJ, encouraging Peter to tell his best friend the truth too, blurts out the name “Peter” in front of Ned, who appears stunned to learn Spider-Man’s real name. 

Brand New Day ends with an unmasked Peter again running into Ned and introducing himself by name. It isn’t until the pair do their elaborate signature handshake, which Ned appears to remember via muscle memory, that his face lights up.

“Peter!” he exclaims. 

Does Spider-Man: Brand New Day have a post-credits scene? 

Yes, audiences can expect a brief bonus after Brand New Day‘s credits roll.

Ned’s old-school computer program tracking the known whereabouts of Spider-Man appears on-screen, indicating that the superhero’s location is “unknown” and nowhere in N.Y.C. Its map widens to include all of the country and world before pivoting into outer space. It’s there that Spider-Man is “found,” per the seemingly glitching device. 

A title card reading “Spider-Man Will Return” appears with no further clues as to when that will be. This leaves the possibilities of Peter Parker’s whereabouts open: He could join fellow superheroes in space, perhaps in Avengers: Doomsday (in theaters Dec. 18, 2026) or Avengers: Secret Wars (in theaters Dec. 17, 2027). Or, the Spider-Man found in space could be Holland’s Peter, or another (like Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s) from the multiverse.

Will there be a sequel to Brand New Day?

As of now, Sony and Marvel have not confirmed another installment of this Spider-Man film franchise, but Holland has teased his further involvement. “Playing Spider-Man has been the joy of my life,” the British actor told GQ in June. “I’ll do it for as long as they’ll have me.”
