The casting to find the next James Bond is officially underway.

On Thursday, May 14, Amazon MGM Studios revealed in a statement that the search for the film franchise's leading man had begun.

"While we don't plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we're excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right,” the studio said.

Variety was first to report the news, stating that the auditions had started a few weeks ago and the studio had enlisted the help of casting director Nina Gold.

The new actor who plays Bond will replace Daniel Craig, whose last film in the iconic spy franchise was 2021's No Time to Die. He also starred in Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015).

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed in its statement that the casting process had "just begun," adding that "the creative team behind the next film has been taking shape over the past several months."

As previously reported by PEOPLE, the upcoming Bond movie will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who directed Dune: Part One, Part Two and Part Three.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman will also be producing via Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films, respectively, while Tanya Lapointe will serve as executive producer, and Steven Knight will be writing the script, Amazon MGM Studios noted in Thursday's statement.

“Amazon MGM Studios announced in February 2025 that it would develop the next chapter of the Bond franchise, the first since No Time to Die brought Daniel Craig's tenure to a close in 2021," the studio concluded in its statement.

PEOPLE reported in February that Amazon MGM Studios would be gaining full creative control over the James Bond franchise.

This came after the studio and longtime Bond producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, announced a new joint venture to maintain control over the intellectual property rights to the character.

The announcement at the time stated that Amazon MGM Studios would hold creative control of Bond projects moving forward.

Casting director Gold, who will be selecting the 26th Bond, has previously worked on multiple productions, including Game of Thrones, The Crown, Les Misérables and five films in the Star Wars franchise, Variety reported.

She also received an Oscar nomination in 2025 for her work on Hamnet, marking the first year that the ceremony had an award for casting, the outlet noted.

PEOPLE has reached out to Amazon MGM Studios and Nina Gold for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
