'Moana' was released in 2016 with Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho voicing the lead roles

Moana is reportedly setting sail for a third time!
Dwayne Johnson said Moana 3 is in the works during a press conference for the live-action adaptation in Rio de Janeiro, per Variety.
“Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes,” the actor, who plays demigod Maui in the animated and live-action movies, said.

Johnson added that Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller will return as writers, after the former worked on all three existing movies and the latter on the latest two. However, he noted that the current attention is on the upcoming adaptation.
“But first, live-action Moana, we’ll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers … they will pen Moana 3," the movie star said.
PEOPLE reached out to Disney for comment.
Moana, released in 2016, follows the title character and Maui on a daring ocean voyage to restore the heart of goddess Te Fiti and save her island. Along with Johnson, the flick starred Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, as well as Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger and Jemaine Clement.
The music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i included the catchy tunes “How Far I’ll Go,” “You’re Welcome” and “Shiny."

Moana 2 came out eight years later in 2024 with most of the original cast reprising their roles.
Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the upcoming film that February while teasing the future of the franchise.

“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise, and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui,” Iger said in a press release at the time.
The follow-up was originally developed as a TV series but became a full-length movie after Iger was impressed with the footage, according to Variety.
The live-action adaptation comes out on July 10 and sees newcomer Catherine Laga'aia as the eponymous character.
Johnson and Clement reprise their characters with John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen as newcomers. Cravalho served as an executive producer.
