Pregnant Mom of 9 Dies After She’s Hit by Car. Her Newborn Son Died in the NICU Days Later

A pregnant mom of nine was killed after being struck by a car while she was walking along the side of a road in Utah.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning shortly before 8 a.m. at 1808 E. Dairy Lane, just north of Moroni, Utah Highway Patrol told KSL-TV. Authorities said 34-year-old Rebeca Hafen was walking on the road’s shoulder at the time of the crash, and identified sunlight and limited visibility as primary contributing factors.

Hafen was rushed to the hospital following the crash, where she later died from her injuries, UHP told KTVX. Doctors performed an emergency delivery, and the baby was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Police have not released the identity of the driver, and criminal charges are not expected “unless investigators determine speed was a factor,” KSL-TV reported, citing police.

A GoFundMe was created to support Hafen’s husband, Tyson, and their family as they navigate the devastating loss. According to an update posted to the fundraiser, the baby has since died.

“Today, our family received more heartbreaking news. Tyson’s sweet baby passed away,” the fundraiser read.

The update said the medical team had done everything possible to care for the newborn and give him a chance to survive, expressing gratitude to the doctors and nurses who cared for him.

Before the baby died, Tyson and his children were able to spend time with him, holding him and saying their goodbyes.

“In such a short amount of time, Tyson and the kids have lost both Rebecca and their new baby. It’s difficult to even put into words the amount of grief this family is carrying,” the statement continued.

The GoFundMe update also thanked everyone who has donated, shared the fundraiser, reached out or offered prayers for the family, saying the support has helped carry them through an incredibly difficult time.

“Rebecca and their sweet baby are together again,” the statement concluded.

The Utah Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional information on Thursday, Sept. 10.
