The Thursday, July 23, search comes nearly five years after Drakeo the Ruler, legal name Darrell Wayne Caldwell Jr., was killed in December 2021 at the Once Upon a Time in L.A. music festival. At the time, Caldwell was scheduled to perform, but was attacked backstage and suffered a fatal stab wound to the neck.

Before the stabbing, the festival featured performances from Snow Tha Product, E-40, Ice Cube and Blueface, while 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg were supposed to perform after Drakeo’s performance.

Following his death, several musicians paid tribute, including Snoop Dogg, who wrote, “I’m saddened by the events that took place last night. My condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Drakeo the Ruler.”

In February 2022, Drakeo’s family filed a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit against Live Nation, Bobby Dee Presents, C3 Presents and other promoters, alleging that the festival “recklessly permitted” the rapper’s “completely preventable” death.

Prior to his death, Drakeo was acquitted in 2019 of felony murder charges and attempted murder following the 2016 killing of a 24-year-old man, according to The Los Angeles Times. The prosecution refiled charges following a hung jury on two counts, and he was released from custody in November 2020 after striking a plea deal.
