The British rock band Squeeze canceled their Virginia concert earlier this week after a worker was crushed to death underneath a tour bus.
U.S. Park Police (USPP) confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement on Saturday, Sept. 5, that its officers were called to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts — a venue located on national park property in Fairfax County, Va. — around 5 p.m. local time on Thursday, Sept. 3.
Officials said a roadside bus service employee, whose identity has not been made public, was working underneath a tour vehicle when a support apparatus failed and the bus collapsed on top of him.
USPP said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wolf Trap announced in a social media post soon after that the show scheduled for that evening would be canceled.
“There was an accident involving a member of the community at Wolf Trap National Park today, tragically resulting in a loss of life. Out of respect, tonight’s show has been canceled,” the venue wrote.

In their own social media post, Squeeze — the English rock group known for ’80s hits including “Hourglass” and “Tempted” — wrote that they were “deeply saddened and shocked by an incident that occurred at the venue earlier today, which resulted in the loss of a life.”
“We will work with the promoter and venue regarding the possibility of rescheduling the show and will communicate further information to ticket holders as soon as it is available,” the band said. “Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic event.”
In a follow-up post, Squeeze shared that their Sept. 4 performance in Ohio would go ahead as scheduled.
“This has been an extremely difficult and upsetting time for everyone involved, and our thoughts remain firmly with the family of the individual and all those affected by this terrible loss,” the band added.

Wolf Trap’s next scheduled show, set for Sept. 5, will feature the National Symphony Orchestra performing the score of Steven Spielberg’s Hook during a screening of the film.
Squeeze released their 16th studio album, Trixies, in March, and the band is currently touring the U.S. They are next scheduled to perform in Highland Park, Ill., on Sunday, Sept. 6.
