Tesla Crashes into Cafe at Target Shopping Center, Leaving 1 Dead and 5 Injured

The cause of the incident remains under investigation

One person is dead and five others have been injured after a Tesla crashed into the café in front of a Target in Southern California.

The Simi Valley Police Department and the Ventura County Fire Department responded to an incident at 51 Tierra Rejada Road at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 29. In addition to the one fatality, five others at the scene suffered minor injuries, per police and KTLA.

A representative for Tesla did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Video taken from the news station’s helicopter was shared to X, showing a white Model X Tesla that had run over a curb and slammed into a shopping center near Target and Urbane Cafe, a restaurant with outdoor seating.

The vehicle’s falcon wing doors and trunk were both open and up, as well as the front hood of the car, with chairs from the cafe scattered throughout the scene.

PEOPLE reached out to the Simi Valley Police Department and the Ventura County Fire Department, but did not immediately receive a response. 

Identities of those involved were not publicly released, but an elderly woman who was walking near the restaurant was killed, ABC 7 reported, citing police. 

Upon arrival, emergency responders reportedly found the elderly victim trapped under the vehicle.

Another elderly woman was driving the Tesla, and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries to her wrist and arm, per ABC 7. The driver's identity has not been made public.

“Every Tesla vehicle is designed with impact-absorbing zones, a stiff passenger compartment to minimize intrusion and multiple airbags to help protect occupants,” per Tesla’s official website. “Active safety features can help reduce impact severity or help prevent accidents altogether.”

Investigators believe the crash could have been accidental, ABC 7 reported. The fatal incident remains under investigation by the Simi Valley Police Department, per KTLA.
