“The Breakfast Club”’s Judd Nelson, 66, Looks Unrecognizable During Rare Public Sighting in Hollywood

The former Brat Pack member was spotted sporting a baseball cap, sunglasses and a long beard on Sept. 8

Four decades after he shot to fame in The Breakfast Club, Judd Nelson has a very different look.

The 66-year-old actor and former Brat Pack member was spotted out and about in West Hollywood, Calif., on Sept. 8. He was photographed wearing camouflage pants, brown loafers, a brown T-shirt and, in a move evoking his iconic Breakfast Club character, a jacket layered over a plaid shirt.

Along with the long, black coat, Nelson kept a low profile during the rare public sighting in a baseball cap and sunglasses. He could be seen carrying a helmet, which he later wore to ride a motorcycle.

The ‘80s heartthrob also rocked a long, gray beard — a slightly lighter version of the signature facial hair he has been sporting for over a decade. He also debuted a longer hairstyle, his brown and gray tresses poking out from underneath his hat.

Nelson got his first acting credit in 1983’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Hotel before finding his breakout role as John Bender, the rebellious teen in The Breakfast Club. He memorably starred in John Hughes’ 1985 coming-of-age teen classic alongside Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall and Ally Sheedy.

The then up-and-coming actors would later become known as part of the Brat Pack — a nickname for the young stars who frequently appeared in teen-centered films together throughout the 1980s.

After The Breakfast Club, Nelson appeared in St. Elmo’s Fire with former castmates Estevez, 64, and Sheedy, also 64, as well as Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Andie MacDowell, Andrew McCarthy and Mare Winningham.

Around 40 years later, in 2024, McCarthy, 63, pursued his former Brat Pack peers for a documentary about the iconic ‘80s teen stars called BRATS. Nelson declined to reunite with his former St. Elmo’s Fire costar for the project.

“Judd didn’t want to talk,” McCarthy said of Nelson’s involvement in February 2024 on a Television Critics Association Press Tour, according to USA Today. “Judd said, ‘the Brat Pack didn’t exist, so I don’t want to talk.’ “

Nelson did, however, reunite with the main cast of The Breakfast Club the following year, in 2025.

All five stars got together for a panel at C2E2, a pop culture convention in Chicago, in April of that year. During the appearance, Nelson laughed while joking of his rebellious character’s future: “I think Bender is clearly the principal of the school.”

After becoming a household name by starring in teen movies in the ‘80s, Nelson went on to act opposite Brooke Shields for three seasons on the TV sitcom Suddenly Susan in the late ‘90s. He also lent his voice to the character Rodimus Prime in 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie and several animated Transformers series throughout the years.

Nelson has continued acting throughout the years, with his other film credits including From the Hip (1987), New Jack City (1991), Conflict of Interest (1993), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Billionaire Boys Club (2018), Girl in the Basement (2021) and The Most Dangerous Game (2022).

He also scored a recurring role on Empire during the series’ first season in 2015. Most recently, Nelson starred in 2024’s South of Hope Street and 2025’s The Final Run.

According to IMDb, the actor has three projects currently in the works, including Kill Me Now, a psychological thriller that wrapped production earlier this year.

Nelson was briefly engaged to the late Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed star Shannen Doherty in 1994, but they never wed.
