A trespasser attempted to enter the California home of Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff this week.
At around 10:30 p.m. local time on Friday, Sept. 11, deputies with the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to Harris and Emhoff’s Malibu home after the former vice president’s private security detail reported a “suspicious person,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) confirmed to PEOPLE.
“When deputies arrived, they contacted the private security detail on the property,” an LASD spokesperson said. “The individual who was outside of the property upon our arrival was warned and advised by deputies to leave the premises and left voluntarily without incident.”

Eduardo Negrón, a spokesperson for Harris, also confirmed the trespassing incident in a statement to the Associated Press and CBS News.
“Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home,” said Negrón.
“Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff were not present. They are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly,” he added.
A trespassing report was taken, and local authorities will increase patrols in the area as a precautionary measure, the sheriff’s department told PEOPLE.
Representatives for Harris did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Sept. 13.
While former presidents receive protection for life, Congress passed a law in 2008 that would only allow former vice presidents, their spouses and children under the age of 16 to receive federal government protection for up to six months following the end of their term.
Harris’ protection was due to expire last July, per the BBC. but Joe Biden extended her protection for 18 months before leaving office.

However, President Donald Trump revoked the extension in a letter dated Thursday, Aug. 28.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter from Trump, 80, read, per CNN.
