Alex Johnsen and Jebin John’s journey on season 4 of The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On came to an unexpected end.

The Netflix dating show follows couples at a crossroads in their relationships. In each pair, one partner is ready to get married while the other isn’t, leading them to issue an ultimatum: get engaged or break up.

To test their relationships, the couples temporarily split up and choose new partners from the cast to enter a three-week “trial marriage.” Afterward, they reunite with their original partner for another trial marriage before deciding whether to leave the show engaged, end their relationshipor pursue someone new they met during the experiment.

Alex gave Jebin the ultimatum after six years of dating, but their biggest obstacle wasn’t just marriage. Jebin’s family did not accept Alex because she isn’t of Indian descent, adding another layer of strain to their relationship.

As the experiment got underway, it quickly became clear that Jebin wasn’t fully embracing the process, while Alex admitted she was beginning to develop feelings for someone else. After Jebin secretly passed Alex a note at the end of episode 2, producers confiscated it and had Alex read it aloud during “The Choice” ceremony. Hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey then announced that the couple’s journey on the show was over.

Alex is a Chicago-based hairstylist, while Jebin works as a hedge fund manager, according to Tudum. Both were 23 years old when filming began.

The pair met while working at a grocery store in Chicago. Alex said she was initially drawn to Jebin’s “goofy sense of humor,” though that same quality also became a source of frustration in their relationship.

“Jebin is a goofy kid who says whatever he wants. I’m very patient with him, but Jebin does have to grow up,” she said in a confessional.

At the time of filming, Jebin was still living at home and admitted he had grown accustomed to his mother taking care of him.

“My wife has to be, like, my new mom,” he said in a confessional.

Their relationship also faced a deeper challenge: Jebin’s family did not approve of Alex because she isn’t Indian.

“My family isn’t very fond of her just because she comes from a different background. Sometimes it is hard for me to bring her around in an Indian setting,” he said. “I worry other people will look at her like she’s an outsider. I wish my family was more accepting of her.”

Why did Alex and Jebin get kicked off The Ultimatum

After learning that Alex was developing feelings for someone else, Jebin slipped her a handwritten note during episode 2. Before she could read it, producers confiscated the two-page letter and brought it up during “The Choice” ceremony.

“We were made aware of a note that was passed last night. Communication is paramount in this entire experience. But that communication needs to happen on camera,” Nick told the group.

Alex was then asked to read the note aloud. While viewers only heard portions of the letter, it revealed Jebin’s anger and jealousy over her growing connection with another participant.

“I honestly hope to God you guys weren’t touching on camera,” one passage read. Elsewhere, Jebin wrote, “I don’t want you to make me look dumber than you already have.” He concluded the letter by writing, “There is no way we are getting married.”

Jebin attempted to explain himself, but several cast members said they no longer felt comfortable participating in the experiment with him. Luke told the group, “I don’t want someone who speaks like that to someone he ‘loves’ to be in a trial marriage with my ex. I don’t feel comfortable with it anymore.”

The Lacheys then announced the couple’s departure from the show.

“Jebin, I think I can speak for the room about the clarity you’ve given us on you not being ready to be involved in this experiment. I think that it’s going to negatively impact the rest of the group,” she said. To which Nick added, “So, Jebin, unfortunately, we’re going to ask you to leave the experience at this point.”

Turning to Alex, Vanessa said, “Because he has left and there is an awkward number, we, unfortunately, will have to ask you to also leave as well.” Nick concluded by telling Alex, “He’s stolen this from you, and that is super unfortunate.”

It’s unclear whether Alex and Jebin are still together, as neither has publicly addressed the status of their relationship since filming. The pair also haven’t appeared together on each other’s social media accounts.

However, in early 2026, Alex posted about being in Puerto Rico, where Jebin lives for part of the year.

Since filming wrapped, Alex appears to have returned to her life in Chicago. According to her Instagram, she is still based there and continues to work as a hairstylist.

Jebin’s Instagram, meanwhile, suggests that he splits his time between Chicago and Puerto Rico.

Ahead of the season 4 premiere, Jebin posted several TikTok videos about The Ultimatum, including clips poking fun at some of his fellow cast members. After the season debuted, he also spoke out about the handwritten note that ultimately led to his and Alex’s exit from the show.

“I ain’t gonna lie, I should have Superman-dove across the table, grabbed the note, put it in my pants and then looked at Nick and been like, ‘What you going to do now?’ ” Jebin said in one video.

He continued, “But I knew that the producers, they probably had a picture because they knew I was going to do something crazy. So I decided to hold my horses and keep a straight face, so they couldn’t clip me up.”
