The actress appeared on Amy Poehler’s ‘Good Hang’ podcast on Sept. 8, where she discussed caring for her late partner

Sandra Bullock is opening up about her sister’s support for her during a difficult time.
The Practical Magic 2 star and producer appeared on the Tuesday, Sept. 8 episode of Amy Poehler‘s podcast Good Hang, where she shared her sister Gesine Bullock-Prado‘s warning as she cared for her partner Bryan Randall while he was battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Asked what she learned about herself as a caretaker, Bullock, 62, said that she realized she’s always been a caretaker — and that “I didn’t take care of the person that was taking care of everybody else.”
“That was a big wake-up call for me,” she said. “I’m not good at asking for help, but I needed help, and I needed to ask it in a way that was safe.”

Bullock added that a “few angels” stepped up to help, pointing her in the right direction of nurses and care. But above all, she said she learned she has an “incredible sister.”
“In her worry for me, she gave me an alarm of going, ‘If you do not start taking care of you, something is going to happen to you and what’s going to happen to Lou and Lai?’ ” Bullock said of her sister’s warning regarding her two teenage children, Louis and Laila.
“I learned about myself that I have an extraordinary sister,” Bullock said. “That’s the only thing that I know; I’m still developing.”

Randall died in 2023 at 57 after a private three-year battle with ALS. Bullock previously opened up about caring for him during an August appearance on Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes‘s podcast SmartLess.
At the time, she shared that, for a while, only Gesine knew about Randall’s diagnosis, as the photographer had asked her to keep it private.
“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried — I honored it,” Bullock explained.
“I know why he asked me not [to],” she said, while sharing that especially amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, “it isolated me in the process” to carry the “huge weight” of his diagnosis.
Bullock and Randall first began dating in 2015. Following Randall’s death, “she needed time to care for herself,” an insider previously told PEOPLE.
“She spent a lot of time healing, being with her kids and being at home,” they added. “She needed to ensure that she and her kids were in the best possible place for her to go back to work.”
Now, Bullock is back on the big screen in a major way with Practical Magic 2, in which she costars alongside Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Lee Pace, Joey King and Maisie Williams,
